more information about our principal consultants Nikki Deighton
and Meredith King.
Nikki
Deighton
With a Bachelor of Arts degree, and diplomas in both Education and Business
(Human Resources Development and Organisational Behaviour), Nikki has
had extensive experience in education and the innovative implementation
of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based programs in
schools. Nikki was a secondary teacher with Curriculum Coordination,
Learning Support and Welfare and Discipline experience as well as being
a Learning With the Internet trainer, Global Classroom Mentor, and Global
Classroom Project Coordinator. Nikki designed, developed and implemented
the 'Lewin' project: an online anthology of student writing generated
through online discussion groups, edited, designed and published in
hard copy by student editorial teams in Victorian schools. 'Lewin' is
the first anthology of its kind to emanate from the southern hemisphere.
Following
the success of her ICT projects, Nikki was offered a position as Senior
Project Officer in the Department of Education and Training's (Victoria)
Learning Technologies team. She established the IdeaBank
project; an online database of teaching and learning ideas contributed
by teachers. Nikki co-managed the Claypoles-Share
the Journey project, which tracked the 12 month experiences of Jim
and Yvonne Claypole as they lived in total isolation in Antarctica.
This website and its interactive activities was the most successful
online project ever developed by DE&T. Over 60,000 visitors used
this website every month. Nikki also designed and implemented the Veterans
Online project; a partnership with veterans from the Victorian Branch
of the Returned and Servicemen's League (RSL) and schools. In 2000,
Nikki developed and managed the curriculum@work
project; heralded as one of the most successful electronic resources
to be distributed to schools in recent times.
Nikki introduced the principles of targeted user-centred research and
design as key processes for all online projects. This involved extensive
research at all key stages of projects: literature reviews, audience
profiling, articulation of interaction designs and ongoing evaluations
of user-uptake, ongoing analyses and evaluation of classroom applications
of the developed online digital content, curriculum planning / communication
and professional development needs to achieve acceptance of the online
projects developed by the Online Education Unit. Nikki was then promoted
to Manager, Online Education Unit and was the SOCCI contact for DE&T
Victoria from 2000 to 2001. Nikki has a comprehensive grasp of the structures,
processes, personnel and directions of The Le@rning Federation national
schools online curriculum content initiative, the digital content being
developed and the learning object model. She designed and managed a
comprehensive training 12 month sessional seminar and workshop program
for over 300 DE&T personnel in 2001 which covered educational soundness,
good online pedagogies, multimedia and effective development of learning
objects. This training has now informed the development of digital content
for DE&T's online editorial workbench. Nikki is now a principal
consultant for dk2.
Meredith
King
After graduating with a Bachelor of Town and Regional Planning from
University of Melbourne, Meredith worked as a transport planner with
the Department of Transport for four years. As a member of the Special
Projects Team, Meredith was responsible for undertaking research, development
and implementation of a number of regional projects to improve public
transport provision in the state of Victoria.
The start
of a family resulted in a career change to fashion design. For five
years, Meredith managed her own children's clothing wholesale business,
supplying over 30 shops around Australia. Meredith and her partner designed
both fabric and clothing.
Another career change introduced Meredith to the world of information
and communication technology in education. After completing a certificate
of business computing in 1995, Meredith joined the Victorian Department
of Education and Training as a member of the Classrooms of the Future
team. The vision, commitment and knowledge of this team of teachers
created a period in which Victoria was internationally regarded as at
the 'cutting edge' in the use of learning technologies in schools. Of
the many innovative projects that were envisaged and implemented by
this team, Meredith supported the highly successful Navigator School
project, the Telematics/videoconferencing project and the Science and
Technologies Centre project.
After a period as Operations Manager for the Curriculum Initiatives
Branch, with responsibilities for personnel, budget and administration
management, Meredith joined the curriculum@work
project team in 2000 and managed the communications and professional
development strategy to support its state wide implementation. curriculum@work
was heralded as one of the most successful teacher support resources
to be distributed to Victorian teachers. In 2001, Meredith was DE&T's
market research contact and was actively involved in the Le@rning Federation's
Market Research activity. In 2002, Meredith became Manager of the Online
Education Strategy team, in the Learning and Teaching Innovation Division
at the Department of Education and Training and was the TLF contact
for DE&T Victoria. Meredith is now a principal consultant for dk2.
